G - Galantamine, Galvumet, Galvus, Geodon, Gleevec, Glucophage, Glucophage Xr, Glucotrol, Glucotrol Xl, Glucovance

Galantamine improves the function of nerve cells in the brain. It works by preventing the breakdown of a chemical called acetylcholine (ah see til KO leen). People with dementia usually have lower levels of this chemical, which is important for the processes of memory, thinking, and reasoning. Galantamine is used to treat mild to moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. Galantamine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Galvumet is a combined medicine that contains two active components 50mg of vildagliptin and 1000mg of metformin. This pharmaceutical is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in patients whose diabetes is not adequately controlled on metformin hydrochloride alone or who are already treated with the combination of vildagliptin and metformin hydrochloride, as separate tablets. Treatment should not be initiated with this fixed-dose combination. Also Galvumet is assigned in combination with a sulfonylurea (i.e. triple combination therapy) as an adjunct to diet and exercise in patients inadequately controlled with metformin and a sulfonylurea. As well, Galvumet is prescribed as add-on to insulin as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in patients when stable dose of insulin and metformin alone do not provide adequate glycaemic control.

Galvus is a medicine that contains the active substance vildagliptin. It is available as tablets (50 mg).Galvus is used to treat type-2 diabetes mellitus. It can be used on its own (monotherapy) in patients whose diabetes is not sufficiently controlled by diet and exercise and who cannot take metformin; also, together with metformin, a thiazolidinedione or a sulphonylurea (dual therapy) when the patient’s diabetes is insufficiently controlled by this other medicine taken alone, but it is only used in combination with a sulphonylurea in patients who cannot take metformin. As well it is used together with a sulphonylurea and metformin (triple therapy) in patients whose diabetes is not sufficiently controlled by these medicines plus diet and exercise; also together with insulin (with or without metformin) in patients whose diabetes is not sufficiently controlled by diet and exercise plus a stable dose of insulin.

Generic Glucotrol is used for treating type 2 diabetes in patients who cannot control blood sugar levels by diet and exercise alone.

Generic Glucotrol XL is used for treating type 2 diabetes in patients who cannot control blood sugar levels by diet and exercise alone.

Generic Glucovance is used for treating type 2 diabetes. It is used along with diet and exercise. It may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicine.
