Pradaxa ehkäisee verihiutaleita tarttumasta toisiinsa ja muodostamasta veritulppia. Pradaxa-lääkettä käytetään ehkäisemään veritulppia ja vähentämään halvauksen riskiä henkilöillä, joilla on tietyn tyyppinen sydämen rytmihäiriö. Pradaxa-lääkettä käytetään myös hoidettaessa ja ehkäistäessä veritulppia jalkojen verisuonissa (syvä laskimotukos DVT) ja keuhkojen verisuonissa (keuhkoveritulppa PE).

Geneerinen Xarelto (rivaroksabaani) on antikoagulantti (verenohentaja), joka estää verenhyytymien muodostumista. Xareltoa käytetään laskimotulppa­nimisen verenhyytymän estämiseen tai hoitamiseen, joka voi johtaa verenhyytymiin keuhkoissa(keuhkoveritulppa). Laskimotulppa voi ilmaantua tietyntyyppisten leikkausten jälkeen. Xareltoa myös käytetään alentamaan verenhyytymän aiheuttaman aivoinfarktin riskiä henkilöillä, joilla on eteisvärinää (sydämen rytmihäiriötä).
